Ok firstly, there is ZERO judgement if you're on the pill. I'll support you whether you're on it, wanting to go on it, off it or wanting to come off it. The purpose of this highlights why supporting your gut health is EXTRA important when using the Oral Contraceptive Pill.
While the pill serves a purpose, it's important to understand how it may impact your gut so you can implement tools to improve your gut health.
1. Changes in microbiome
Remember - all things begin in the gut so ensuring your beneficial gut microbiome is thriving is vital to your overall health and wellbeing. The pill may disrupt your microbiome, leading to imbalances. When imbalances occur, this opens a door for harmful pathogens to thrive (no thank you!)
2. Leaky gut
I'm sure we've all heard this term before. The pill may cause inflammation of the gut and as a result it can become 'leaky' (i.e. toxins leak through barriers instead of being excreted, food isn't digested properly and therefore nutrients are not absorbed properly).
3. Associated with gut disorders
Research indicates that long term use of the pill is associated with an increase in chronic, long term inflammation, associated with gastrointestinal concerns such as IBS.
